Ok students now let’s get in Formation! Queen Bey has officially made her way into the college classroom and it’s pretty freaking dope.
The University of Texas at San Antonio is set offer a class this fall which focuses on Beyonce’s visual Lemonade Album. The course will be taught by Professor Kinitra Brooks who developed and is teaching the class that will meet three times a week.
According to Daily Mail,Course started with exploring how Lemonade is a ‘meditation on contemporary black womanhood. It is now advancing and diving into the ‘theoretical, historical, and literary frameworks of black feminism. The course is titled ‘Black Women, Beyonce and Popular Culture,’.
In the syllabus, Brook states, ‘You will work harder in this course than you ever have before. Be ready to read, write, and think in challenging ways”. You will be reading the equivalent of a little less than a book a week. Please make sure you are ready, willing, and able for this type of rigor. Studying race, gender, class and pop culture theory is incredibly fun…and incredibly hard. There is no shame in deciding you are not ready. You do not have to be a member of the Beyhive.
She went on to mention, “I simply ask that you are willing to be uncomfortable — to have your thoughts and ideas challenged — and then to work/read/write your way through that un-comfortability in order to become a stronger critical thinker.”
But…..the cool part about the class by far has to be the fact that Brooks will offer extra credit to students who show up in a Beyonce themed costume to the UTSA class on Halloween.
