Downtown Chicago has a new Champs store and it’s pretty dope! The grand opening of Champs was held on July 27th, 2017 hosted by “World Wide Wayne” Dwayne Young.
The soundtrack specialist for the night was infamous Sean Macnificent (Dj Sean Mac). The theme was “ChiMade”, paying homage to Chicago’s history of sports, music, art, and fashion.
The location of the new Champs is prime, nestled on State Street, with modern fixtures and amazing art throughout the store. The art was curated by extraordinary high school students from Little Black Pearl Art and Design Center located in the Kenwood/Oakland neighborhood in Chicago. There were also some very creative Chicago inspired T-Shirt collages made with magazine clippings created by LBP (Little Black Pearl) and Chicago artist Brandon Breaux. Monica Halsip, founder and executive director of Little Black Pearl gave a very informative speech on the art collaboration with Champs and starting with Jordan Brand with apparel design. Monica mentioned the showcase displayed what Chicago youth can do with a whole new level of opportunity of how they can be designers and make a living in this industry.
There was even more captivating art displayed throughout the store by Hamza “IN-ZO” Muhammad. IN-ZO gathers much of his inspiration from comic books, music, and art from around the world. There were very memorable pieces of Muhammad Ali, and Darth Vader with very distinct line art and color that showcased this artist unconventional outlook on art. IN-ZO has created art for Little Black Pearl, the hit tv series Empire, and Chicago Fire just to name a few. Definitely a must-watch young artist on the rise!
There were numerous Chicago natives in the house and superstars including WNBA Chicago Sky Tamera Young. Dwayne kept the crowd going with his witty humor hosting trivia games presenting winners with Champs gift cards. The trivia games were hilarious, and the packed Champs store was definitely entertained.
This was a great night hosted with great comedic timing including networking, laughter, inspirational art, food, and dope music. THIS is what Chicago is Made of! #ChicagoMade
