‘Insecure’ Star Jay Ellis Breakup on Screen Felt Like Real Life

With Season 2 of HBO’s hit show ‘Insecure’ returning this July, the battle lines are still drawn between #TeamIssa and #TeamLawrence. The debate continues on whether Issa’s cheating was 100% her fault, whether Lawrence was right in how he left and whether the two would or should get back together. No matter who side you’re on (I’m #TeamIssa!) one thing for sure is that everyone will be tuned in to see what unfolds after Season 1’s cliffhanger.
Lawrence (Jay Ellis) sat down with The Wrap and stated that acting out the break up scenes with co-star Issa (Issa Rae) was difficult to get through. He stated “I felt like I spent so much time getting close to Issa and that relationship and just how close we had become as cast mates. I felt like I was breaking up with her as a person in real life.”
One thing Ellis is excited about showcasing next season is the growth of his character, particularly how his character and men handle being cheated on. “It’s not something that we get to see,” he said. “It hasn’t really been talked about on TV a lot, the different stages we go through. Does he go back? Does he become numb and never have feelings again? Does he go out and look for another girl? I would really like to see what happens with that.”
We won’t have to wait much longer to have these questions and more answered with the July 23 premiere date quickly approaching. In the meantime head on over to The Wrap and watch the entire interview!
