After critically acclaimed performances in blockbuster movies like ‘Hidden Figures’ and ‘Moonlight’ Janelle Monáe is the IT girl of Hollywood right now and her black girl magic isn’t letting up anytime soon! The CoverGirl beauty is reportedly being eyed for the lead role in the Charlie’s Angel remake scheduled to hit theatres in the Summer of 2019.

Although the details of the Sony Pictures film are in its beginning stages, we do know that Narcos screen writers Carlos Bernard and Doug Miro are slated to write the script while actress Elizabeth Banks will take on the directorial role for the movie. The franchise started in October 2000 with the release of the self-entitled movie starring  Lucy Liu, Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz and followed with its sequel Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle in 2003.

The remake of Charlie’s Angels continues the trend of diversity within Hollywood in casting African American leads in traditional White leading roles and adds to the number of films being produce that showcase African American women at the helm of these movie megahits.

With Monáe’s recent work being more serious and melancholy it will be fun to see her in an action packed light hearted movie. Get ready for the new squad to kick some serious butt when the movie comes out June 7, 2019!
